Several Olympians testify at times when doping controls were so deficient that they could have cheated, if they wanted to.
“The damage of not keeping an athlete under surveillance during a doping control is potentially huge,” says skating star Nils van der Poel.
In addition, an electronic system from the international anti-doping agency Wada can be used to warn elite athletes about doping tests.
Wada has declined an interview, but writes that there are protection mechanisms and that it would be both difficult and labor-intensive to use the system to cheat.
