Police warn of a worrying new trend where children, sometimes as young as six, post videos of themselves with sexual undertones on sites like TikTok.
Young children are unaware of the consequences when they expose themselves on the internet.
In this case, it can put them in danger of so-called sextortion. This means that adults who watch them can threaten them and pressure them to make more videos.
A global phenomenon
Flemming Kjรฆrside, police commissioner from the Special Crime Unit, says that this is not just a Danish phenomenon.
“It’s perfectly normal for kids to explore their own sexuality and play sex games, but it gets a little dangerous when the game ends up on the internet where everyone else can keep up,” he said.
In some cases, the police suggest that the children copy what they have previously seen on pornographic sites.
And although the platforms quickly remove this type of video, they can be easily viewed and copied.
What you can do to prevent it
As a parent of a young child, there are a few things you can do to protect them when they are on the Internet, police said.
Always remember to delete your browser history before giving your iPad or phone to your child – especially if you use it to view content such as. porn.
Second, make sure the security setting is set correctly on any application they may be using. You can also talk to your child about what a phone or iPad is used for, how they use it, and what they have seen while using it.
Finally, Save the Children reminds parents that young children should not be allowed on platforms like TikTok. The legal age to set up an account is 13 years.
