The Department of Defense announced on Friday that it had signed a formal purchase agreement for dozens of F-35 fighter jets.
Finland will replace the aging Hornet fighter jet with 64 Lockheed Martin aircraft and a weapon system for approximately EUR 8.4 billion.
The board approved the acquisition of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multipurpose fighter in December. The Hornet fleet is set to phase out by 2030.
The ministry said the Defense Forces Logistics Chief Major General Kari Renko signed a contract for the F-35 system and the air-to-air weapon system.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen signed an industrial participation agreement for the fighter program with Lockheed Martin and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.
