Danes in Ukraine advised to return home

With the situation worsening along the Ukrainian border, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised all Danes to leave the country.

It has also raised its travel advice security level to red. This means that all travel to Ukraine is discouraged.

At the time of writing, it is still possible to leave Ukraine with regular air, road and rail transport.

In its statement, the ministry states: โ€œIt is not possible to say whether or when these opportunities can be reduced, and Danes in Ukraine are therefore encouraged to leave the country. The Danish authorities can not guarantee assistance to Danes who choose to stay in Ukraine at a later date. “

Reduction of embassy staff
The Danish embassy in Kiev will for the time being remain open and operational to allow contact with the Ukrainian government and continue Danish assistance to the country.

“However, the embassy’s opportunities to assist Danes in Ukraine can be reduced both significantly and suddenly depending on developments in the country,” says the ministry.

All Danes and persons with legal residence in Denmark are encouraged to immediately register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ so-called Danish list and to unsubscribe after leaving Ukraine. This list will help the ministry get an accurate picture of how many people are still in Ukraine.

Reveal Russian plans
This change in the level of security comes at about the same time as the United States is declassifying information on what could be Russian President Vladimir Putin’s next step.

According to the US authorities, an invasion of Ukraine could take place later in the week – based on a video that allegedly shows atrocities committed by Ukrainian soldiers.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S Peskov denied allegations that the video was false.

“This is not the first report of its kind,” he said, according to the New York Times. โ€˜Similar things have been alleged before. But nothing ever came out of them. “
