A study conducted by the Central Jutland Region on behalf of the Danish Agency for Security of Supply reveals that some corona rapid tests are sad.
There are 46 different kinds of throat, nose and saliva tests approved for sale in Denmark, and one of them had an accuracy of only 2.5 percent when detecting corona.
The best-performing test, on the other hand, had an accuracy rate of 94 percent. Nine of the 46 had an accuracy of over 90 percent.
Each test was applied to 700 samples: 500 positive cases and 200 negative cases.
Flowflex is the best choice
Rapid tests are still available at the centers, though many have closed since the government’s confirmation that they will cease operations on March 6, but are mostly used for self-tests in homes, schools and workplaces.
The Central Jutland Region has assessed the tests since the summer of 2020. A total of 65 million test sets have been purchased.
The best performing, with 94 percent, is Flowflex, which is produced by the American manufacturer Acon. A close second place with 93 is Wondfo.
– It is surprising that it was a home test where you have to inoculate in the outer part of the nasal cavity, which turned out to be the best, says study leader Uffe Vest Schneider from Hvidovre Hospital to DR.
On a par with the centers
In contrast, the PCR tests have an accuracy of 98-99 percent, while the rapid test centers operated by CPH Medical, Falck and Carelink had 92, 87 and 84 percent, respectively.
The Central Jutland Region is pleased that it chose Acon, which can be purchased online, for use at its public institutions.
The study is currently being peer reviewed.
Ignore the instructions!
Sometimes, Schneider advises, it’s best to ignore the instructions!
“If you need to take a quick test, take a test from the front of the nasal cavity. Avoid throat swabs (except PCR) and especially saliva swabs, which are the worst to find infection,” he said.
โWhen taking a test, do not necessarily follow the instructions. Insert the swab straight in, then horizontally, and about three inches. That way, a sample is taken from the front of the nasal cavity. “
In other corona news:
– The reproduction rate is now 0.9, which indicates that infection rates are falling by 10 percent across the country. Although they have fallen in eastern Denmark and the capital, they are rising in western Denmark.
– About 71 deaths have been recorded during the last two days, which may seem quite high. Included in the numbers, however, are all those who have received corona during the last month.
– There are only 31 corona patients in intensive care today, of which 13 are on a respirator.
