The US and Canadian men’s hockey teams both leave the Olympics in Beijing without a medal.
It is the first time since 2006 that no North American team will play for a medal at the Winter Games.
Slovakia beat top-seeded Team USA 3-2 in a penalty shootout and Sweden beat Canada 2-0 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
In the penalty shootout, the Americans went 0-for-5 and Peter Cehlarik scored the only goal on Slovakia’s fourth attempt.
The United States has not won a medal since a silver medal in Vancouver 2010 and has not won gold since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” troupe.
Lucas Wallmark scored in the third period and Anton Lander added an empty player for Sweden who got 24 saves by Lars Johansson.
