Warm temperatures, rain and melting snow together have wreaked havoc on several roads around the country, says Fintraffic’s Traffic Management Center.
Antti-Jussi PalmroosOn Wednesday, the executive director of the traffic control center urged motorists to be especially careful to avoid holes in road surfaces now filled with water.
"You are being repaired, but more and more damage is being done. You should be careful not to damage your car," said Palmroos.
Damage to road surfaces has been reported on several roads in Uusimaa and elsewhere in the country where the weather has been rainy.
The main roads damaged in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are Ring Road III, especially in Espoo. Contractors were making repairs overnight.
Palmroos said no major accidents had been reported in the early afternoon, but he warned motorists that bumps could occur on all streets or roads in the area.
Speed limits may be temporarily lowered on some roads until the damage can be repaired. The worst sections of busy roads are at the top of the repair schedule, but there is currently more damage than can be repaired.
The city of Helsinki announced on Wednesday that the streets are "unfortunately in poor condition."
City maintenance workers have not been able to respond quickly enough to the changing weather demands of the entire city. The streets of the suburbs, and especially the residential streets, are in poor condition.
