BEIJING, February 19 (Xinhua) – Sweden took the gold medal in the men’s team’s curling by beating Great Britain 5-4 by an extra finish at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this Saturday.
Skipped by five-time world champion and PyeongChang silver medalist Niklas Edin, Sweden was ahead 3-2 after six finishes, while Great Britain leveled the match at 3-3 in the seventh with a score and a good defense.
The Swedes regained a one-point lead in the eighth end, before Great Britain broke the ninth and made it 4-4 in the 10th to force an extra finish, where Sweden scored a single point to secure their victory.
“We got some mistakes out of them, which we had to hope for, because they had hammers and we needed to play a perfect match to win them,” said Sweden’s third player Oskar Eriksson.
This is Sweden’s first Olympic gold in the men’s team’s curling. Edin completed an unrivaled Olympic cycle and finished fourth in 2010, third in 2014, second in 2018 and now first in 2022.
“Since we lost the final in PyeongChang, the goal has always been to come here in Beijing and win the gold medal. We knew it would be a long and really tough journey to come here and have a chance to win it. So we are super good. Happy to win den “, said Edin.
“I’m super proud of our team when we held together and played the best tournament of our lives,” he added.
This is also the second medal for Eriksson in Beijing 2022 after taking bronze in mixed doubles. “The gold is fantastic and heavy, and I will have a sore neck tomorrow”, Eriksson laughed.
The ladies’ curling final will be played between Great Britain and Japan on Sunday.
