prime minister Sanna MarinThe SDP government survived a vote of confidence in Parliament on Wednesday, with MPs voting 94 against 67. There were 38 MPs absent and none empty.
The vote of confidence was held after the Basic Finns, the Christian Democrats and the Movement Now tabled a motion of censure on the government’s attitude towards rising fuel and energy prices.
There was a lively debate on Tuesday before the vote.
In the motion, members of the opposition criticized the government for its overly ambitious climate policy and called for cuts in fuel tax and household electricity tax, among other things.
In their response to the motion, the ruling parties rejected the opposition’s demands as costly and supportive of the use of fossil fuels. The government also referred to a package of measures it announced last week to compensate for rising prices.
Among other things, the government intends to temporarily reduce the travel expenses for business trips, make a "professional diesel" available – fuel for professional drivers, which would be taxed at a lower rate – and would ease agricultural costs by temporarily suspending farm property taxes.
