Russian forces are trying to take control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, says President Zelensky

Kiev [Ukraine]February 24 (ANI): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Russian occupying forces were trying to take control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

“Russian occupation forces are trying to seize the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated. Reported this to Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe,” he said in a tweet.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry tweeted that a Russian attack on Ukraine could “cause another ecological disaster.” “In 1986, the world saw the biggest technological disaster in Chernobyl,” the ministry tweeted. “If Russia continues the war, Chernobyl could happen again in 2022.” In the midst of Russian military operations, the Ukrainian president is forming an anti-Russian coalition against President Vladimir Putin.

He said he had spoken to French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer about concrete sanctions and aid.

“We are creating an anti-Putin coalition. I spoke to @vonderleyen, @EmmanuelMacron, @karlnehammer and @RTErdogan about concrete sanctions and concrete help for our military. We are waiting for decisive action,” Zelensky tweeted.

Earlier in a series of tweets, the Ukrainian president said he would give weapons to anyone who wants to defend the country and lift sanctions against all citizens of Ukraine who are ready to defend the country.

“We will give weapons to anyone who wants to defend the country. Be ready to support Ukraine in the squares of our cities,” Zelensky tweeted.

“We will lift the sanctions against all citizens of Ukraine who are ready to defend our country as part of territorial defense with weapons in their hands,” Zelensky added.

Shortly after Russia began military operations in the Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday the decision to suspend his country’s diplomatic relations with Moscow.

“We have broken off diplomatic relations with Russia. For all those who have not yet lost their conscience in Russia, it is time to go out and protest against the war with Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

He said that Russia had treacherously attacked Ukraine this morning and compared the act to Nazi Germany.

“Russia treacherously attacked our state this morning, as Nazi Germany did during the 2WW years. As of today, our countries are on different sides of world history. Russia has embarked on the path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and will not do so. give up their freedom no matter what Moscow thinks, “Zelensky added.

At the same time, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on his partners to establish strict diplomatic relations with Russia.

“Ukraine has severed diplomatic relations with Russia. I urge all our partners to do the same. Through this concrete step, you will show that you stand by Ukraine and categorically reject the most obvious act of aggression in Europe since World War II,” Kuleba tweeted. (ANI)
