But you don’t have to move as fast as the locals do. If you want to admire the true beauty of Helsinki, you should take the time to explore as much as you can. Here are some things you can do while visiting Helsinki.
Visit local landmarks
There are many landmarks worth visiting in Helsinki. A good example is Suomenlinna, a Finnish fortress founded in the 19th century to defend against the Russians. The fortress even covers the islands that you can visit by ferry.
Another amazing monument is Helsinki Cathedral, built in the 19th century. It was formerly called St. Nicholas’ Cathedral in honor of Tsar Nicholas I of Finland, but was named Helsinki Cathedral after Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917.
The third place to visit is Temppeliaukio kirkko (in Finnish: Temppeliaukio kirkko, also known as Kalliokirkko and Kalliokirkko). The church, built directly on solid rock in 1969, is the only round church in Finland that has been built partly underground. The building has good acoustics and is often used for concerts and musical performances.
Try the local food
If you are in Helsinki from the end of July to the end of August, you have the opportunity to experience the “Crab Party”. This is a time when there is a rush in fish restaurants, because there is a crab season and especially Swedish-speaking Finns organize crab parties at home.
