The opposition party NCP has demanded that Finland send weapons to Ukraine as the people fight the Russian invasion.
Tweet Monday morning, NCP leader Petteri Orpo wrote that the party hopes the Finnish government will meet soon and reconsider the decision made on Sunday to send only material aid to Ukraine, but not weapons.
"The time for negotiations is now over. I reiterate yesterday’s demand by the NCP that the government urgently convene and correct yesterday’s decision and send weapons to Ukraine in support of the defensive." Orphan wrote adding "now it’s a rush".
The government announced on Sunday that it would send 2,000 bulletproof vests, 2,000 composite helmets, 100 pairs and equipment to two first aid stations to Ukraine.
Several EU countries have promised to send weapons to Ukraine, but Finland has not made a similar decision.
Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (Cen) has not ruled out the possibility that Finland will also supply arms and added that the country is part of a European effort to help finance arms for Ukraine.
"In terms of arms assistance, Finland joins the joint EU package, which also includes arms assistance and other military elements." Kaikkonen said.
