President Sauli Niinistö meets with the President of the United States Joe Biden in Washington on Friday, the president’s office said in a press release on Thursday.
The presidents will discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine, the effects of the war on European security arrangements and bilateral co-operation between Finland and the United States.
Niinistö is scheduled to meet with other politicians in Washington in addition to Biden. The president had previously issued a statement on Thursday saying that Finland’s security environment is changing rapidly and dramatically.
Russia invaded Ukraine a week ago. According to the British intelligence service, the progress of Russian troops has slowed in recent days.
According to the UN, more than 230 civilians have died in the first five days of the war. According to the UNHCR, more than a million Ukrainians have fled the country.
In December, Russia had demanded that the West guarantee, among other things, that they would withdraw NATO troops from Eastern Europe, and promised that Ukraine would not join NATO.
