TikTok extended its 1-minute limit to 3 minutes last July. By extending the time per video at TikTok, the brand hopes to see more engagement from its users – which in turn can lead to higher advertising revenue.
The selected number of users were already able to upload five-minute videos to the platform, but thanks to TikTok’s latest update, anyone can publish longer videos. While this change may attract more users and increase overall engagement, it remains to be seen whether longer videos will work well with the TikTokin For You algorithm.
Speaking to The Vergelle, a social media consultant and industry analyst Matt Navarra said that longer format videos tend to be easier to commercialize and keep users engaged for longer. Navarra explained that TikTok also needs to figure out how it should fit longer videos to the platform.
Navarra said, “They could make a dedicated home for longer content because (it) doesn’t sit so well in a vertical feed with shorter stuff that people are used to squeaking fast.”
