Sauli Niinistö spoke with Ukraine on Friday Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone, the Office of the President of the Republic says.
According to Niinistö’s office, the duo discussed the war in Ukraine and Finland’s aid and support to the country.
The need for the safe evacuation of civilians and the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants was also discussed.
Niinistö and Zelensky agreed to keep in touch.
The President of Finland was to call the President of Russia Vladimir Putin later on Friday.
Niinistö told the press on Thursday that the French president Emmanuel Macron and the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have stressed the importance of keeping lines of communication with Putin open.
In a speech to the media on Thursday, Niinistö emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of the Ukrainian war to Europe.
Foreign and security policy experts have told Yle that it is unlikely that Finland will take on the role of mediator in the war.
