Eleven trucks loaded with medical supplies, vehicles and blankets are near the Ukrainian border and are expected to arrive in war-torn country by Tuesday. Ari MäntyvaaraLogistics Manager of the Tampere Logistics Department of the Finnish Red Cross.
The trucks were still on the Romanian side of the border on Monday morning, he told Yle by phone.
"They are due to get to the Ukrainian side today. The border is an hour’s drive away." Mäntyvaara said, adding that it remained unclear whether the trucks should stay in Romania overnight.
Mäntyvaara is part of a team tasked with helping areas of Ukraine that are not yet in the service of the international wing of the Red Cross.
Aid workers have set up a base and warehouse to store relief supplies. Goods such as blankets are to be distributed to the Ukrainians immediately, according to Mäntyvaara, he added that a couple of trucks only had medical supplies.
"There is a great need for them," he said.
Mäntyvaara said his team is on their way to a conflict-free area in Ukraine and will be in the country for about three weeks.
"There are definitely long days ahead and we follow all safety regulations. We try to get help and work effectively to make things go according to plan," Mäntyvaara said.
Once the trucks are unloaded, they have to leave for Hungary.
