The Tampere Kauppi reception center has been filled with Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war in their home country, the city of Tampere announced on Friday.
The statement added that 155 people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine are housed in downtown and emergency accommodation.
"The reception center is full. Emergency accommodation may take a few more times," Acting Director of Social and Health Services in Tampere manager Liisa Korkatti said.
By Thursday, a total of about 600 Ukrainians had applied for temporary protection from Tampere.
The city also has a lot of Ukrainians in private housing. The Finnish Red Cross’s private accommodation unit in Tampere is responsible for this part of housing operations.
Korkatti said that at the moment there are enough volunteers to take care of the incoming ones. Initially, the conditions at the reception center were criticized, but according to Korkat, efforts have been made to remedy the shortcomings.
Numerous organizations have provided assistance and the city is cooperating with the Finnish Red Cross and Save the Children. A child-friendly operating space will open at the Tampere office over the weekend.
"Sports clubs and several associations have also been in contact with us and provided activities. Crisis assistance is available from the Reception Center in cooperation with the Osviita Crisis Center," Korkatti added.
