Josef Newgarden overtook Team Penske’s teammate Scott McLaughlin from New Zealand on the final lap on Sunday to win XPEL 375 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.
McLaughlin led for most of the race before Newgarden passed him in turn 4 on the final lap and hit him to the finish line in 0.0669 seconds, a photo finish.
“How about Scott. I think he led about 95 percent of the yards,” Newgarden said. “I hate to do it to a teammate, but I bet on it, just like him. We drove hard.”
Newgarden, the driver of the 2nd PPG team Penske Chevrolet, took his 21st IndyCar victory in his career. Team Penske won its 600th win in all racing programs.
McLaughlin, who won last month’s season opener at St. Louis. Petersburg, Florida, did almost two against two in XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet no. 3.
“If you’re going to lose it to someone, your teammate is the guy you want to lose it to,” he said. “Congratulations to Josef and his PPG team.”
NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson took sixth place for his best IndyCar finish to date. Johnson is running the entire IndyCar schedule for the first time in 2022 after joining the circuit part-time last year.
