The government has warned Finns to pay more for food.
This month, the Minister of Economy Mika Lintilä said that the war in Ukraine could almost double food prices in Finland. He also suggested that people should prepare for wartime pricing.
Hufvudstadsbladet writes that climbing food bills is squeezing those who are already struggling to cope.
According to a Swedish-language daily, almost a million people in the country are already living below the poverty line or at risk of falling below it.
According to Lintilä, Finns spend about 11 percent of their income on food, although the share is relatively higher in low-income households.
There are about 205,000 unemployed people in Finland, which is 7.5 per cent of the working age population.
Russian property owners
Property purchases by Russian citizens do not threaten Finland’s security. This is the case according to the tabloid Evening News which investigated 395 real estate transactions in Finland over the past two years by Russians.
Since 2020, persons who are not citizens of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) have had to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Defense to purchase real estate in Finland.
The ministry has approved all the permits submitted by the Russians over the past two years. Most of the purchases were made in cities near the Russian border.
"You can never be absolutely sure of anything, but we have no reason for hysteria," Anu Sallinen the ministry told IS.
The real estate law was passed after a public debate on an extensive criminal investigation into a Russian-owned company suspected of money laundering and purchases. "strategically important" property in the Turku archipelago.
