The two best seeded players, Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and Paula Badosa from Spain, won the second round on Wednesday in the rain-delayed Credit One Charleston Open in Charleston, SC
Sabalenka, the No. 1 seed, defeated American Alison Riske, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the season’s first clay-court event for her first victory since the end of February. 2-seeded Badosa went on to win 6-4, 6-1 over Hungarian Anna Bondar in the round of 16.
Madison Keys from the USA, seed No. 9 who was champion in Charleston 2019, went on with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ulrikke Eikeri from Norway, and sixth-seeded American Jessica Pegula rolled past Jasmine Paolini from Italy, 6 -2, 6- 1. Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine beat off the No. 5 seed, Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Other winners were third-seeded Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, 10th-seeded Belinda Bencic from Switzerland, 12th-seeded Alize Cornet from France, 15th-seeded Amanda Anisimova from the USA, Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu, Russia’s Ekateronia’s Alexandrova, Russia’s Ekaterina’s Alexandrova. Kaia Kanepi and US Coco Vandeweghe and Claire Liu.
Tatjana Maria from Germany upset third-seeded Rebecca Peterson from Sweden 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16 in Bogota, Colombia.
In other matches, Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine defeated Sara Errani of Italy, 6-3, 7-6 (3); Elina Avanesyan from Russia beat Lucrezia Stefanini from Italy, 6-2, 6-2; Laura Pigossi of Brazil threw out Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2; and Mirjam Björklund from Sweden beat Yuliana Lizarazo from Colombia 6-1, 6-4.
