As a 20-year-old, the Egyptian football player Mohamed Salah leaves (born 1992) his turbulent homeland behind him to follow his professional dreams in Europe. Barely a decade later, the humble goal-scorer has won both the Premier League and the Champions League with his club team Liverpool, and in the coup has become a national icon in Egypt.
This is the story of how he got from the dusty gravel pitches in his home village to the absolute top tier of modern football. It is also about remembering its roots, the impossible demands that arise when one begins to be considered an ambassador for an entire religion and what it means to be a source of inspiration for an entire generation of post-revolutionary dreams.
The episode features Gilda Hamidi-Nia, foreign reporter on SVT, and Rami Shaaban, former football professional.
