The Criminal Sanctions Agency (CSA) intends to help prisoners improve their digital skills through a project in four Finnish prisons.
In Helsinki, Hämeenlinna, Sukeva and Turku, a year-long experiment uses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide prisoners with the skills they need in modern work and study environments.
"Teaching artificial intelligence is easy in a closed environment and does not require much space or investment. It can be taught in a short time, in which case prisoners serving a short sentence can also participate. Prisoners can be motivated to take part in a more modern working life than we have been able to provide," senior expert Satu Rahkila explained.
CSA will deliver the project in collaboration with Metroc, which specializes in the development of technology solutions for the construction industry.
The work offered to prisoners focuses on the Finnish construction industry and teaches them to find information in documents through recurring tasks and questions. Prisoners receive normal prisoner compensation for their work on an artificial intelligence project.
By modernizing the prison workforce, the CSA aims to equip prisoners with the technical skills they need to secure a job in the modern labor market and help them better integrate into society.
The agency added in its press release that a previous experiment with AI training for prisoners had yielded positive results, confirming the suitability of such work for the prison environment.
