The library bridge in the city of Turku was lit up in the colors of the Finnish flag on Friday evening in honor of the Coalition Party MP. Ilkka Kanervawho died Thursday at the age of 74 of a serious illness.
The blue and white lighting remained visible until Saturday morning.
City officials had also arranged for flags to hover in the midst of Friday as a tribute to a Turku politician.
"Thank you for your work on behalf of the City of Turku, the people of Turku and Finland. The grief is so great" The city of Turku wrote on Twitter.
Kanerva had been a Member of Parliament since 1975, when he was first elected in the district of Southwest Finland. He also served as a minister in three different governments, including the Minister of Transport, the Minister of Labor and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
