In a statement on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned the holy robbery of the Holy Quran in Sweden and said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the burning of God’s holy word (Quran) in the Swedish city of Linköping by a Danish racist and extremist element such as has occurred under the pretext of freedom of expression with the support of that country’s police. “
He said that the deliberate repetition of such offensive moves during the holy month of Ramadan has damaged the feelings of Muslims in Sweden and around the world. “Such an insulting act is the obvious example of spreading hatred, is contrary to freedom of expression and must be condemned by all who believe in coexistence and dialogue between religions.”
To hold the Swedish government accountable, Khatibzadeh said that Stockholm is expected to take “immediate, strong and explicit” measures against the perpetrators of such offensive measures and to take clear and practical measures to prevent such acts from being repeated.
The Iranian spokesman finally noted that the insulting move in Sweden highlights the need for stronger unity among Muslims and Islamic nations against the plans hatched by the enemies of Islam.
On Thursday, a riot broke out in the city of Linköping on Sweden’s east coast where a demonstration that included a Koran burning was planned. Two people were arrested during that demonstration.
The far-right leader Paludan has regularly been at the center of incidents in recent years. In November 2020, he was arrested in France and deported. Five other activists were arrested in Belgium shortly afterwards, accused of intending to “spread hatred” by burning a Koran in Brussels.
