The pope and European priests are urging both Russia and Ukraine to lay down their arms during the coming Easter weekend, when Orthodox Easter is celebrated. But from the supreme leader of the Russian Church, Patriarch Kirill, the message is that war is necessary. It has to do with his close ties to Putin and his view of Ukraine as an indivisible part of the Russian Empire.
In this week’s P4 world, we hear Russia’s correspondent Maria Persson Löfgren about why Russia will not have time for a ceasefire during the Easter weekend. We also hear Olga Granlöf chairman of the association for Russian-speaking women in Uppsala, where she is also active in the Center Party, on how to celebrate Easter in Ukraine during a burning war and Michael Hjälmrector and theologian at the St. Ignatius Foundation and himself an orthodox believer, talks about the common goals of the church and Putin.
