The certificate has significantly facilitated safe travel within the EU and supported the tourism industry, Wigand added.
The EU has had a digital coronavirus certification system in place since last July. The document is issued to persons who have received a full vaccination, a recent negative PCR test or have successfully recovered from COVID-19. The certification system was initially introduced for one year. A total of about 1.7 billion certificates were issued and used in 60 countries.
