The first patient was Andemariam Beyene, a 36-year-old Eritrean researcher living in Iceland who had throat cancer. He underwent surgery in June 2011 and was highlighted at press conferences where the operation was described in positive terms. But he had huge problems with his plastic throat and a lot of complications. He died in 2014.
