Recent developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. All times EDT:
01:45: Ukrainian officials said they expect more civilians to be able to evacuate from the besieged city of Mariupol on Monday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message late on Sunday that more than 100 civilians could leave on Sunday and that they would arrive in Zaporizhzhia on Monday, about 200 kilometers away.
With Russian troops taking control of the rest of Mariupol, hundreds of civilians and an estimated 2,000 Ukrainian troops have been detained at Azovstal’s steelworks. Several previous attempts to evacuate civilians from the site collapsed and Ukraine accused Russia of shelling evacuation routes. “For the first time, there were two days of real ceasefire in this territory,” Zelenskyy said.
01:15: Britain’s defense secretary said more than a quarter of Russia’s 120 battalion tactical groups at the start of the conflict in Ukraine had probably been “made ineffective.” The ministry added that some of the most elite Russian units “have suffered from the highest levels of fatigue.”
12:15: The White House announced that First Lady Jill Biden will begin a trip to Romania and Slovakia on Thursday, which will include a meeting with Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion. Biden will also meet aid workers, local families who support Ukrainian refugees and even educators who help Ukrainian children continue their education.
12:01: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the highest-ranking elected official to visit Ukraine President of Kyiv. She led a US congressional delegation that promised more support for Ukraine and unwavering solidarity in its fight against Russian aggression. VOA’s Arash Arabasadi has more.
