The youth wing of the center has now joined other political groups to support the decriminalization of cannabis and the cultivation and sale of the plant for medical purposes.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of the youth party delegation over the weekend.
Attitudes towards cannabis have become more permissive over the years.
Citizen initiative The call for a softer approach to the use and possession of psychoactive substances reached parliament in 2019, but was recently rejected by the Law Committee. The initiative collected 55,634 signatures.
In September, the Greens became the first party in the Finnish government – and parliament – to legalize marijuana.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Welfare (THL) noted that the discussion on legal cannabis was welcome.
However, it is decriminalization that the Central Youth advocates, not complete legalization. More specifically, the political youth organization supports the abolition of criminal penalties for the possession and cultivation of small quantities of marijuana.
The group says decriminalizing young users could be better protected by social policy than punishment. Under current legislation, drug seizures can lead to a criminal record.
"In order to minimize future problems with cannabis use, the individual should be allowed to possess and cultivate small amounts in Finland." The decision is set out in a reasoned press release.
Other benefits, according to the youth group, would be a flood of tax revenues if the sale of the drug is regulated and removed from the black market.
"Known for its safe production industry, Finland could become a top producer of medicinal cannabis and various hemp products," the printer further outlined, emphasizing the potential of the agricultural sector.
The “parent” party of the youth group The Center has not yet expressed a supportive position. So far, only MP Mikko Kรคrnรค (Cen) has publicly expressed its willingness to see the decriminalization of marijuana and its cultivation for export purposes.
