Hundreds of millions of people watch the Eurovision song contest every year – the competition has a huge impact. Despite the ban, political messages appear on the starting field from time to time.
Eurovision rules against political contributions
The organizer of the competition European broadcasting union, EBU, has rules that all competing countries must adhere to.
– It says that the Eurovision song contest is a non-political event. You must not politicize the contributions and you must ensure that Eurovision is not in any way disgraced, says Eurovision expert Bella Qvist.
Russia ported from Eurovision 2022
After President Vladimir Putin’s and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there was a debate about whether Russia should be allowed to compete. Finally, Russia’s contribution from Eurovision 2022 was ported to Turin.
– The EBU used the rules which said that it could be disgraceful for Eurovision, says Bella Qvist.
