A recent security survey by the EVA incubator shows that Finns believe that the country would be able to repel a Russian military attack on its own with a 48 percent probability.
Respondents also estimate that there is a 19 percent probability that Russia will use military force against Finland later this year, and a 30 percent probability that such a transfer will occur by 2027.
According to Ilkka Haavisto, EVA’s research manager, these views reflect the cold realism that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has provoked in the Finnish public.
More than 2,800 people responded to the think tank’s survey in April-May. The maximum margin of error is plus / minus three percentage points.
An opinion poll conducted by EVA at the end of March showed that about 60 per cent of Finns would support Finland’s accession to NATO, which was a 34 percentage point increase in support for Finland’s membership compared to a similar poll conducted last autumn. It was the highest support for NATO membership since Eva began a poll in 1998.
The survey also found that only 19% of respondents would oppose such a measure, compared to 40%.
Support for NATO membership in Yle’s opinion polls has risen from 53 per cent in February to 62 per cent in March and 76 per cent in May.
