BRUSSELS, Belgium: Three years after the adoption of the EU’s groundbreaking copyright rules, Google will pay 300 publishers across Ireland, Germany, France and other EU countries to republish their news.
Google will also develop an app to make it easier for publishers to sign up, and offer them an extended news preview agreement that allows Google to display snippets and thumbnails of their news for a license fee.
News publishers, among Google’s harshest critics, have called on governments to ensure that online platforms pay fair compensation for their content.
“So far, we have agreements covering more than 300 national, local and specialized news publications in Germany, Hungary, France, Austria, the Netherlands and Ireland, with many more discussions ongoing,” said Sulina Connal, Head of News and Publishing Partnerships, according to Reuters. The statement does not say how much publishers were paid by Google.

Two thirds of this group are German publishers, including Der Spiegel, Die Zeit and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
