The application of the so-called Light (aka Light) was launched last year and currently has about 130,000 users in Finland, the developers said.
The launch attracted considerable media attention, as Valo was reported to be a dating service for heterosexuals only. Christian Newspaper Church and City (City and Church) wrote (in Finnish) it "a new dating app to help heterosexuals with Christian values find a life partner."
Founder of Light Miika-Markus Järvelä and a member of the Board Erkka Simolin told Yle, however, that same-sex users of the app have since changed and added that Valo is a dating service for all members of Christianity.
"The service was developed 20 years ago based on the spirit and ideas of the time. The service is currently being developed in line with our mission and vision. The service is constantly evolving and adapting to usage," the developers responded with a joint email to Yle.
The application is based on Kotisatama’s online dating site, which has been operating for almost 20 years.
They added that about half of the users of Light are men and half are women, most of whom are 25-50 years old.
