Finland won the world hockey championship after winning a dramatic overtime 4-3 Canadian Sunday night in Tampere.
The 2022 title is the fourth (or Lions) after previous victories in 1995, 2011 and 2019, and this is the first time that Finland has won the championship at home.
Extra time paint Sakari Manninen secured a historic victory in front of an enchanted Tampere Arena audience.
Dramatic game
The first penalty of the game had led to the first goal when Finland Niklas Friman he was sent to the penalty area for two minutes at the start of the second inning, and Canada used their extra numbers to the full to score. Dylan Cozens.
Finland equalized at the start of the third round when, as a result of successive penalty shootouts, Canada fell to three players on the ice plus their goalkeepers, and the pressure finally expressed Mikael Granlund collided with a loose puck to shoot at the net.
The goal proved to be a double hit for Canada as a netminder Chris Driedger injured while trying to block a shot from Granlund and had to be replaced Matt Tomkins – who appeared for the first time in this year’s tournament.
Although one Canadian player returned from the penalty shot, the Lions still had a numerical advantage, and they took the win again through Granlund when his shot hit Tomkins low to the left.
Lions then withstood Canadian pressure before Joel Armia scored a goal and took Finland to the 3-1 lead, and the victory looked certain.
But the drama of the evening was not far over. Zach Whitecloud seemed to be retreating to Canada, but the goal was initially knocked out before it was returned after a video review, and the score was 3-2.
Less than a minute after the game and with just over a minute left, Canada equalized when Max Comtois scored his third goal.
Finland was eliminated in overtime and took advantage of the power game opportunities offered to them when Thomas Chabot was sent to the penalty box because of the hook Hannes Bjรถrninen. Granlund baited and Manninen finished.
The victory is a very successful year for the Finnish team, as the world championship can now be added to the gold medal won at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.
