The Central Criminal Police (NBI) has completed a preliminary investigation into the smuggling of more than 200 kilograms of cocaine into the country.
According to NBI, the drugs arrived in the port of Helsinki in Vuosaari in March in a cargo container loaded with red wine bottles.
Police said they managed to seize 37 pounds of cocaine, which means most of the suspected drug was not caught.
"The drugs were hidden in the tank and found before the tank reached the right recipient," Detective Chief Inspector Marko Heinonen The Central Criminal Police (NBI) told the news agency STT.
A preliminary investigation into the case is still pending, but police say the main suspects have partially admitted their involvement in the operation.
The main suspects in the case are a Swedish citizen and two Danish citizens. They are suspected of aggravated drug offenses and are under pre-trial investigation.
One Dutch citizen and one Finnish citizen are also suspected of serious drug offenses in connection with the case. All five suspects are men.
According to police, the street value of smuggled cocaine is more than 20 million euros, when a gram is 100 euros. Some of the cocaine seized was very pure, about 90 percent, police pointed out.
Authorities described the amount of cocaine imported into Finland as significant and rare.
"Such large consignments are generally sent directly to the Netherlands-Spain axis and then in smaller batches to the Nordic countries," Investigating Chief Inspector Heinonen explained.
The case has been referred to prosecutors for consideration, and the trial is expected to begin before Midsummer, police said.
