The Turku Court of Appeal upheld a lower court ruling against an 18-year-old man for his involvement in a car accident that resulted in the deaths of three people and increased his prison sentence.
The Pirkanmaa District Court sentenced the defendant to five and a half years in prison last October when he was found guilty of three counts of gross negligence at a young age because he was a minor at the time of the crash.
He had been charged with three murder charges related to a car crash near the city of Tampere in Nokia just after one o’clock on 16 August 2020.
The car derailed and collided with a tree, killing three teenage passengers immediately. The driver survived minor injuries.
He was also convicted of aggravated drunk driving and aggravated endangerment of road safety at a young age.
In its decision, the Court of Appeal added a year to the defendant’s sentence, which means he is now facing six and a half years in prison.
The court found that the videos and photos shared by the driver and the passengers in the car to Snapchat just before the crash showed the driverโs contempt for road safety and indifference to the well-being of his passengers.
The decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
