Finland and Estonia signed an agreement to acquire a floating terminal at the end of April. The 10-year lease for the floating Exemplar terminal was signed in May.
The small locality was chosen as a location partly because of its suitable port infrastructure. The port owned by Fortum is located in an industrial area with a suitable pier and has previously served a nearby coal-fired power plant. It has a deep-sea route that allows access not only to the 300-meter terminal vessel but also to liquefied natural gas tankers.
The port is also located near the Baltic Connector pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia. Prior to the arrival of the floating terminal, a two-kilometer pipeline will have to be built so that gas can also be delivered to Estonia.
The project will be completed on a very tight schedule and the goal is to have the terminal operational next winter. Helsingin Sanomat pointed out that the project partners are already preparing for the possibility that the construction or permitting processes will not be completed by the deadline, but that an alternative site is being built in Estonia.
“We are on a very tight schedule. We want to make sure that if something happens, we have more than one option,” says Olli Sipilä, CEO of Gasgrid Finland.
However, the ship will have a long-term home in Inkoo.
