A unanimous district court sentenced Paolo Macchiarini for causing bodily harm, a felony, in one case. He is acquitted on two of three charges and sentenced to a suspended sentence.
The surgeon has been prosecuted for three cases of aggravated assault, against three patients who had synthetic tracheas implanted in the years 2011–2012
Macchiarini himself has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the operations on the three patients were performed as a life-saving measure and that the implant was the only option for them.
