and more than two-thirds (69 per cent) came from just five countries: Syria (6.8 million), Venezuela (4.6 million), Afghanistan (2.7 million), South Sudan (2.4 million) and Myanmar (1 .2 million).
“Every year in the last decade, the numbers have risen,” said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Filippo Grandi.
In its report, UNHCR stressed that last year was significant due to the number of escalating conflicts and the number of new conflicts that erupted: 23 countries with a combined population of 850 million faced conflicts of medium or high intensity.
At the same time, it said food scarcity, inflation and the climate crisis are increasing peopleโs difficulties and stretching the humanitarian response just as the financial outlook looks bleak in many situations.
The report also found that by May 2022, more than 100 million people were forced to relocate due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights abuses or serious disturbances.
โEither the international community comes together to take action to resolve this human tragedy, resolve conflicts and find lasting solutions, or this terrible trend continues,โ Grandi warned.
