In many places in Finland, the harvest season for domestic strawberries has begun to return to normal after last summer’s exceptionally warm weather. Due to the high temperatures last June, the strawberry harvest season started early and ended quickly.
This year, the season will return to normal, towards the end of June.
Although the cool weather in spring and early summer slowed strawberry ripening this year, conditions have still been favorable.
"Strawberries like it a little cooler and there has been enough water," by Miikka IlomäkiExecutive Director of the Finnish Fruit and Berry Farmers Association.
Currently, the sun and heat are now accelerating ripening.
"The quality should be perfect this year. Everything went according to plan, so the crop will be top quality and tasty," Ilomäki predicted.
The industry refused to give a strawberry price forecast for this year.
However, Raisa HaavikkoThe executive director of the Suonenjoki berry farmers’ association said that a radical rise in prices is unlikely.
