“A big step”
Other measures in the climate package aim to strengthen the EU’s trade quota system, establish a social climate fund and increase the targets for CO2 capture in soil and forests.
The overall climate targets are also set to increase for the member countries, where Denmark raises its 2030 emissions target from 39 per cent to 50 per cent.
Ultimately, climate ministers hope that their proposed legislative package will help the EU achieve its target of a 55 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
“It is a big step for Europe’s green transition and for independence from Russia, which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago,” said Jørgensen.
Negotiations on the climate package are now continuing in the European Parliament.
