The Helsinki police have issued a water safety warning after a young man was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in a jet ski accident on Saturday.
"Jet skis are very efficient and can go really fast. Few people have the skills to handle them at high speeds, and the situations can be life-threatening," Sergeant Panu Kanniainen wrote in a press release.
According to the police, the Water Scooter involved in Saturday’s incident was traveling at high speeds between Vasikkasaari and Koivusaari, off the coast of the capital, when it overturned and threw two passengers into the water.
There have been several similar near misses in the waters around Helsinki in recent weeks, the police said, adding that many people renting jet skis do not understand that crafts are "no toys" and can cause serious damage.
The Finnish Coast Guard has previously stated that people traveling on jet skis have been spotted following the wake of ferries leaving Tallinn, saying such activity was "very dangerous".
The police are investigating Saturday’s incident on suspicion of endangering traffic safety.
