“That’s why the EU is donating an additional €15 million to UNICEF to help identify boys and girls returning to Afghanistan who need help, as well as children who are at risk of migration, and give them options other than migration or labour,” he said. According to a UNICEF statement, many Afghan children were forced to work, with some even risking employment abroad, as 88 percent of households had at least one child working under harsh conditions outside the home.
Meanwhile, Mohamed AyoyaUNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan said that the EU is donating a total of 25 million euros to UNICEF and the World Health Organization to support polio vaccination campaigns across the country, especially at borders where children may pass through.
“Afghanistan is one of the two remaining polio-endemic countries in the world, and transmission often occurs when children move from Afghanistan to Pakistan and back, causing them to miss their regular vaccination appointments,” Ayoya said.
“These funds will enable UNICEF and WHO to strengthen polio vaccination efforts to ensure that all children in the country and children crossing transit points are vaccinated against polio,” he added.
According to a statement released by UNICEF, the organization had procured 33.5 million doses of polio vaccines, which vaccinated 6.3-9.8 million children from May 2021 to April 2022.
“Permanent teams stationed along the busy Iran-Pakistan borders have also vaccinated 1.2 million nomads,” the statement said.
According to Khaama Press, polio has been completely eradicated worldwide, with the exception of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
