According to the company, the occasional large delays to the Midsummer’s Day cost the state railway company VR about 200,000 euros in passenger compensation.
The delay in the construction of the track in Lempäälä municipality caused significant delays in the return trips following the Midsummer weekend. At worst, some of the night train passengers were delayed up to 24 hours.
VR said on Monday that approximately EUR 200,000 in compensation will be paid to customers. It said it has received thousands of customer refund requests and is still processing them.
According to the company, the delays affected around 4,000 passengers.
"We have also received various requests for compensation for the costs caused by the delays and they are dealt with individually," company communications specialist, Julia Stolpsaid.
"We understand that some customers had to make their own decisions, for example to take a taxi to the airport themselves and then seek compensation from us." he said.
The delays also caused other additional costs for VR, such as replacing stuck train lines with buses. All in all, the disruption costs the company several hundred thousand euros.
