American gun rights activists say shooting in Copenhagen proves that gun laws do not work, statistics say otherwise

American conservatives take to to say that strict gun laws do not prevent gun , and erroneously point to Sunday’s shooting in a shopping center as evidence.

“Shooting in Copenhagen where weapons are PROHIBITED? Ooooh child, I can not wait for the left to explain how it happened! ” tweeted Lavern Spicer, a Republican congressional candidate in Florida.

“There was just a in Denmark, a country with some of the strictest gun laws in ,” said Lauren Boebert, a Republican congressman from Colorado. “It’s time to admit that gun laws do NOT stop mass shootings!”

“Can anyone on the left explain to me how a nation like Denmark has mass shootings when the only type of weapon that civilians are allowed to own without a [license] is air rifle, ”JR Majewski, a Republican congressional candidate in Ohio. “It sounds like gun laws are useless to criminals, as we have said.”

Stricter gun laws
Gun Policy, an organization with a focus on gun control and violence, says that it is true that Denmark has restrictive gun laws. Those who seek to be authorized gun owners in Denmark must demonstrate a real reason to possess a firearm, such as for collection or hunting.

Furthermore, civilians are not allowed to own fully automatic firearms, while semi-automatic weapons and handguns are only allowed with special permission.

But as those on the other side of the American political corridor have been quick to point out, it is also true that Denmark has significantly lower rates of gun violence than the .

Minor violence
The last time there was a mass shooting in Denmark before Sunday’s event was in February 2015, where two people were killed and five were injured in a series of terror-related shootings.

The United States, on the other hand, has already experienced 309 mass shootings by 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive, an independent data collection organization. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot or killed, except the shooter.

, six people were killed and dozens injured in a shooting in Chicago. And in May, mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, killed dozens within a week.

According to Gun Policy, the total number of annual gun deaths in the United States consistently exceeded the number of annual weapons deaths in Denmark by a factor of at least 600, despite having a population that is only about 56 times larger. In 2018, for example, the organization reported 39,682 gun deaths in the United States compared to 64 in Denmark.

New gun laws in the United States
The epidemic of gun violence in the United States has led to some political action. In June, Congress passed the most significant firearms legislation the country has seen in nearly 30 years.

The legislation imposes stricter background checks on young buyers, blocks arms sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners, and provides funds for the implementation of “red flag” laws, mental programs, and school upgrades.

The law rarely enjoyed bipartisan support, with 14 Republicans joining the Democrats in the House and 15 Republicans joining the Democrats in the Senate.
