A day after Finland and Sweden signed the NATO accession protocol on Tuesday, five of the 30 member states – Norway, Denmark, Canada, Iceland and Estonia – have ratified the two countries joining the alliance.
Norway, Denmark and Canada approved two new Nordic memberships on Tuesday, i.e. the day of signing the accession protocol.
The foreign ministries of all three countries sent their wishes to Finland and Sweden on social media and hoped for a quick ratification process from the NATO allies.
The next day, Wednesday, Estonia and Iceland were added to the list of ratifiers.
"Estonia is among the first to sign an agreement and did it lightning fast. I trust a quick process from all allies," Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas comment on the tweet.
There are 25 member states left to approve Finland and Sweden joining the alliance, and there is some lingering concern that it will not be as smooth as the first five ratifications.
Although the Turkish government accepted the invitation of Finland and Sweden to NATO, the decision still has to pass through the country’s parliament – as there is some uncertainty regarding the tripartite agreement signed by Turkey, Finland and Sweden at the Madrid summit last week.
