Investments in certain nuclear power plants using the latest technology and natural gas-powered plants can therefore be labeled as sustainable investments according to the EU.
Iris SuomelaThe vice president of the Green League described the voting result as “very frustrating” in terms of the climate.
The aim of the taxonomy, he reminded, is to ensure that investments are effectively targeted at solutions that combat the climate crisis and that investors who make sustainable decisions do not accidentally support activities that are harmful to the environment.
“Now this guarantee is missing,” he wrote.
“Taxonomy is not prohibitions, but information for investors. The classification must definitely be based on research data – not purely on a political game, which is clearly more important than research to some politicians.”
“Natural gas is a fossil fuel, the use of which produces emissions that accelerate global warming. These facts do not change even if you claim that gas is a sustainable form of energy.
The awarding of the green label to natural gas was also called into question from another point of view, wrote Helsingin sanomat newspaper. Ukrainian parliament member Inna Sovsun reminded the EU legislators a day before the vote that classifying natural gas as a green investment would be one way of indirectly supporting Russia.
“The EU cannot support Ukraine and at the same time build a society based on cheap natural gas from Russia,” he stated in the European Parliament on Tuesday.
“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin rubs his hands with joy today,โ he tweeted after receiving the results of the vote on Wednesday.
