According to the Police Board, the number of intoxicated boaters recorded in Finnish waters has decreased over time. Last year, however, the cases increased slightly compared to the previous year.
Every year, around 300 people are convicted of driving a boat under the influence of alcohol.
The decrease in drunkenness at the helm is explained by the fact that drunkenness on ships is better recognized as a crime. Also, drunk boating is not as culturally accepted as it used to be.
In pleasure boating, the drunk driving limit is now the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in per mille. In the 1990s, the limit was comparatively higher, 1.5 per thousand.
A record number of Finns have enjoyed boating this year.
