Americans Steve Johnson and Jack Sock opened the Infosys Hall of Fame Open with straight victories on Monday in Newport, RI
Johnson, who won the tournament in 2018, beat compatriot Stefan Kozlov 7-5, 6-3. Johnson outscored Kozlov 6-0 and won a dominant 31 of 37 first-hand points (83.8 percent).
At the same time, Sock Radu Albot from Moldova topped with 6-1, 7-6 (2). Sock saved four of five breakpoints, including two setpoints down 6-5 in the second set to secure a tiebreak.
In an all-Australian duel, Jason Kubler defeated Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-3 and Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk topped Ugo Humbert of France 7-5, 6-4.
Nordea Open
Five-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta took down Swiss qualifier Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-4 in the first round in Bastad, Sweden.
Carreno Busta managed Wawrinka’s 10 aces and controlled the match, winning 30 of 35 first service points (85.7 percent) and never facing a break point.
Laslo Djere from Serbia beat the Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-5, and the Swedish wildcard Elias Ymer won 6-4, 7-6 (5) over the German Daniel Altmaier.
