Pirkkalainen told the newspaper on Monday that he was surprised by the criticism. In his opinion, the statements of the members of the center were “more visible” this year than “in a long time”.
“Already at the beginning of Pride week, Chairman Annika Saarikko and Vice President Riikka Pakarinen published their own updates and statements about the themes of Pride week for equality and non-discrimination. I personally participated in the Pride Parade, and the party around the event paid an extraordinary amount of marketing, he said.
“To say that we have chosen to remain silent is simply not true.”
Saarikko drew attention to the incident in a tweet he sent to condemn the deadly attack on a gay bar in Oslo, Norway.
According to Helsingin Sanomat, no statements related to the themes of the event were shared on the social media accounts of the centre. According to Pirkkalainen, the decision not to share statements on such themes was not a conscious choice.
“This year we communicate through people. I didn’t realize that someone could consider it significant that, for example, the chairman’s statement was not distributed to the party’s accounts, he commented.
“I don’t really understand why it would have been particularly important [communicate on social media] because we participated in other ways.”
